Äänen Lumo invites anyone with a connection to the sonic arts field to propose events for a new space for sonic arts in Vallila, Helsinki. This initial open call is for events to be organised in October, November and December of 2024. The open call is ongoing and proposals are evaluated by the 15th of each month, after which applicants are contacted as soon as possible.
Potential events include, but are not limited to: live performances, sound installations, performative gestures, lectures, workshops, series of get-togethers etc. We are also open to suggestions for simply getting involved with the new space, for example by sharing skills or knowledge, or helping out in any other way.
Äänen Lumo can offer the space and a number of resources (sound system, chairs, tables, etc.) free of charge. If needed, limited technical assistance can be provided upon prior agreement. Since the space is managed by a community of volunteers, the organisers / artists / applicants are asked to take responsibility for the event, for example covering the costs of transportation or rent of additional equipment, hosting guests, building any possible installations, hanging artworks and cleaning the space after the event. It is also asked that both the space and its resources are used with utmost care.
Äänen Lumo received a grant from Kone Foundation in 2023 to open a new space dedicated for sonic arts. This space is a multifunctional venue of approximately 180 m2, located in Vallila, Nokiantie 2-4. The idea is that it can serve as a concert and exhibition space, a place for discussion and learning, but also a get-together and leisure space for the community. Äänen Lumo will act as a coordinator for the space for the next two to three years, aiming to keep it horizontal and easy-access, placing emphasis on co-curation, commoning and community building. We are dedicated to organising events and projects centred around sonic practices, that follow the safer space principles and show an interest in co-curation and involvement during the time of the events.
The space is wheelchair accessible, but there are no accessible toilets.
